OFFICIALS DOWNGRADE FLORIDA’S CITRUS FORECAST
Agricultural officials are downgrading Florida’s orange crop forecast for this season. The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimated Monday that Florida would produce 103 million boxes of oranges in the current growing season. That’s a decrease of 5 million boxes from the estimate released last month. The most recent forecast is smaller than the 104 million boxes produced last year, which was the lowest on record.
AUTHORITIES SEARCH FOR 7 TEENS WHO ESCAPED JUVENILE FACILITY
Authorities are searching for 7 teens who escaped from a youth residential treatment program in Jacksonville. The Department of Juvenile Justice says the boys who escaped the Duval Academy are all non-violent offenders. Department spokeswoman Heather DiGiacomo says two of the boys fled the facility Friday while on a recreation field and five others followed on Sunday.
AUTHORITIES WANT TO DESTROY SARASOTA DOG THAT BIT BABY
Sarasota County authorities have confiscated and plan to destroy a dog that attacked a 10-month-old boy. Officials say the mixed-breed dog named Fudge was impounded after the attack Friday. The boy was airlifted to All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg due to facial and head injuries from the dog’s bite. Officials say the boy is expected to recover from the injuries.
VAPOR CLOUD AT POOL STORE INJURES SEVERAL
Authorities say a cloud of vapor at a central Florida pool supply store sent several people to the hospital. The incident happened Monday night when truck driver making a routine delivery to a Holly Hill pool supply store accidentally poured chlorine into a sulfuric acid tank. Fire officials say the combination caused a dangerous chemical reaction.
MAGIC SHOOT 59 PERCENT IN WIN OVER BULLS
The Orlando Magic used their offense to earn a sorely needed win. Nikola Vucevic and Victor Oladipo each played a big role. Vucevic had 33 points and 11 rebounds, and the Magic snapped a six-game losing streak with a 121-114 victory over the Chicago Bulls on Monday night. Orlando (14-27) shot a season-high 59 percent from the field in its first win in Chicago since an 83-82 victory on Dec. 16, 2013.
