SENTENCING SET FOR EX-OWNER OF MLB STEROID CLINIC
The former owner of the South Florida clinic that supplied performance-enhancing substances to Major League Baseball players and other athletes is seeking a lenient prison sentence from a federal judge. The attorney for Anthony Bosch is asking for a sentence lower than the three to four years recommended by sentencing guidelines. Bosch has cooperated extensively in the investigation. A hearing is set Tuesday before U.S. District Judge Darrin Gayles in Miami. Bosch pleaded guilty in October to conspiracy to distribute testosterone to athletes from the now-closed Biogenesis of America clinic in Coral Gables. One customer was New York Yankees star Alex Rodriguez.
ANDREA BOCELLI, BARRY GIBB, GLORIA ESTEFAN TO PERFORM AT MIAMI BEACH 100TH ANNIVERSARY CONCERT
Andrea Bocelli, Barry Gibb and local star Gloria Estefan are set to perform at Miami Beach’s centennial concert next month. The free concert on March 26 will also feature Jon Secada, English guitarist and singer-songwriter Dave Mason, Jamaican reggae and hip-hop artist Ky-Mani Marley, jazz flautist and Nestor Torres, Miami Beach vocalist Nicole Henry and Jamaican reggae band Third World.
ASTRONOMERS GATHERING IN FLORIDA KEYS TO SEE OBJECTS THAT CAN’T BE SEEN FROM MOST OTHER PARTS OF US
About 500 amateur and professional astronomers are setting up telescopes in the lower Florida Keys this week to observe southern constellations, comets and stars during the 31st annual Winter Star Party. Event founder Tippy D’Auria said Monday the Keys’ latitude of 24.5 degrees means astronomers can see down to minus 65 degrees on the horizon. That enables them to view celestial objects that can’t be spotted from most other locations in the contiguous United States.
FLORIDA FATHER ACCUSED OF THROWING DAUGHTER OFF BRIDGE TO APPEAR IN COURT
A Florida man accused of throwing his daughter over a Tampa bridge is set to appear in court. John Jonchuck has a history of mental illness and was found incompetent to stand trial last week. He is slated to appear at a hearing Tuesday. If the court rules in line with the doctors’ reports, Jonchuck would likely be sent to a hospital for six months before his case returns to court for another status check.
HIT AND RUN CRASHES ON THE RISE IN FLORIDA
Florida law enforcement officials say hit and run crashes are increasing at an alarming rate. That’s why they’re launching a new campaign to let drivers know that leaving the scene of an accident can result in tougher penalties. Florida had more than 80,000 hit and run crashes last year. According to the state Highway Patrol, fatal hit and run crashes increased by 23 percent in Florida between 2013 and 2014 and nearly half of those victims were pedestrians.
