COAST GUARD URGES BOATERS TO SLOW DOWN AFTER NEW YEAR’S EVE FIREWORKS IN POPULAR MIAMI-DADE COUNTY WATERS
The Coast Guard has established a “regulated navigation area” from 11 p.m. Dec. 31 through 1 a.m. Jan. 1 in Biscayne Bay waters. Speeds will be restricted to 15 knots or less. Key Biscayne Police Chief Charles Press says authorities will be prepared to arrest drunken or reckless boaters. The Coast Guard and state wildlife authorities also will patrol South Florida’s waters.
LEBRON RETURNS TO MIAMI
LeBron James was running the gamut of emotions Thursday when he arrived at the arena that he called home for the past four seasons. So did the Miami Heat fans who were seeing him again. They booed the four-time NBA MVP when he and the Cleveland Cavaliers took the court for warmups, booed the first few times he touched the ball, gave him plenty of cheers but still a mixed welcome when he was introduced as a starter, then cheered when he turned the ball over on one of his first touches. The Heat went on to beat the Cleveland Cavaliers 101-91 in a hyped Christmas matchup.
GIRL, 12, DIES IN CHRISTMAS EVE CRASH
A 12-year-old girl is dead and six others are recovering from injuries after the driver of a vehicle she was riding in struck two cars and lost control and overturned in Jacksonville. The crash happened at 11:52 p.m. on Christmas Eve.
DOG RETURNED TO SOUTH FLORIDA COUPLE AFTER VETERNARIAN PERFORMS FREE SURGERY
The owners of a 4-year-old dachshund got a Christmas miracle when a South Florida veterinarian performed free surgery on the dog. Lola had a slipped disc that prevented her from walking. Owners Sumey and David Hageman gave her to an animal rescue group because they couldn’t afford the $6,000 surgery. But veterinarian Michael Wong of Kendall heard about their plight and did the surgery. On Christmas Eve, the Lola was reunited with her Pembroke Pines family.
POTENTIAL REVEL CASINO BUYER WANTS DISCOUNT
The Florida developer in line to purchase the former Revel Casino Hotel in Atlantic City says in court filings that the auction for the property wasn’t run fairly and he wants an $8 million discount. Lawyers for Glenn Straub said in a court filing Wednesday that the property should be sold for $87 million, not the $95.4 million runner-up bid his Polo North Country Club put in at auction.
