FL Cracking Down On Gas Pump Skimmers

Florida agriculture commissioner Adam Putnam has announced his answer to the growing problem of gas pump skimmers.

The plan will likely involve tougher requirements for gas stations to make sure their self-serve pumps are free of personal-information-stealing electronic devices.

Putnam’s plan would force gas stations to increase security measures to prevent theft of consumer financial information, hike sentences for thieves caught using skimmers and those caught using credit and debit cards and numbers that aren’t theirs.

Putnam is coming out with his plan after a sweep found more than 100 skimmers attached to gas pumps statewide at any one time.

Gas pump skimmers steal an average of $1,000 from each consumer.
