FL Lawmakers Start Third Special Session Of ’15

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) _ Florida lawmakers are starting a possibly contentious and lengthy special session.

The Florida Legislature on Monday opened a 19-day special session to redraw 40 state Senate districts.

This past summer the Senate acknowledged in court filings that it violated the state constitution by creating previous maps that benefit Republicans and incumbents.

Legislative staff has drawn up six different maps for legislators to consider.

But it’s not clear how easy it will be for the House and Senate to agree on a final map.

Legislators held a special session in June to pass a new budget.

They returned in August to redraw congressional districts after the state Supreme Court ruled the congressional map violated the constitution.

If approved the proposed maps could change the current split between Republicans and Democrats.
