FL Inmate Kills Self Hours Before Sentencing

FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) _ Lee County Sheriff Mike Scott says a 72-year-old inmate jumped to his death from the second floor landing of his cell block the day before he was scheduled to be sentenced for killing his ex-wife and her fiance.

Michael Stephen Spiegel was convicted in August for the 2014 deaths of his 70-year-Marilyn Spiegel and 72-year-old Harry Carlip.

He was scheduled to appear in court in Fort Myers on Monday afternoon.

The News-Press of Fort Myers reports Spiegel had been in the Lee County Jail since he was arrested on May 15, 2014, the same day of the murders.

His former wife was scheduled to marry Carlip two days later in Fort Myers.

Spiegel held a doctorate degree in physics.
