FL Bridge Back Open After Barge Hit

MERRITT ISLAND, Fla. (AP) _ Officials say traffic is flowing again after a barge struck a bridge over the Indian River in central Florida.

Yvonne Martinez of the Cocoa Police Department says the barge was carrying a crane when it struck the bridge Friday morning.

The bridge on State Road 528 in Merritt Island was closed to traffic for almost two hours.

Inspectors from the Florida Department of Transportation examined the bridge and said there were no safety concerns.

Traffic started crossing the structure around 10 a.m.

Martinez says there were no injuries.

Cocoa police and the Brevard County Sherriff’s office are investigating, along with the Florida Highway Patrol and the Florida Department of Transportation.

Merritt Island is between Cape Canaveral and the mainland on Florida’s Atlantic coast.
