Final pieces lifted to top of World Trade Center

NEW YORK – The last sections of a 408-foot spire will be lifted to the top of One World Trade Center will take place Thursday morning, if the weather cooperates.

This will eventually make the building the tallest building in the western hemisphere – but NOT on Thursday. The two spire sections will be placed on a temporary platform for installation at a later date.
When the final pieces of its spire are installed, the 104-floor skyscraper will become the highest in the Western Hemisphere at 1,776 feet.

Officials had hoped that would happen Monday, but the weather did not cooperate.

The new high-rise replaces the twin towers destroyed on Sept. 11, 2001.

The 408-foot spire will serve as a world-class broadcast antenna.

The new tower is at the northwest corner of the World Trade Center site, which is well on its way to reconstruction with the 72-story Four World Trade Center and other buildings.
