Deputies Say Woman Who Shot Infant Son Has Died

OCALA, Fla. (AP) _ Authorities say a 20-year-old central Florida woman who shot her infant son before turning the gun on herself has died.

Marion County Sheriff’s officials said Melanie Reyes was taken off life support Tuesday.

Last week, a relative of Reyes’ saw a Facebook posting from Reyes concerning a suicide.

The relative called authorities, and deputies went to the home of the Reyes’ parents Friday and found her and the baby in a back bedroom.

No one else was home.

Six-month-old Jonah Mendoza died from his wounds.

The boy’s father Jordan Mendoza said there were signs Reyes was struggling with mental illness.

The Ocala Star-Banner (http://tinyurl.com/am3lgqh) reports he had contacted state agencies and local law enforcement before the shootings.

He was also trying to establish his parental rights through the courts.
