Deputies responded to a call regarding a possible arson at a residence on California Street. A male subject called the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office advising that he was being evicted and was presently setting the residence on fire, according to HCSO.
According to police, deputies were confronted by a male subject upon arrival who was extremely aggressive and the situation escalated to the point deputies were forced to engage the suspect with deadly force.
The male has been airlifted to a trauma center with life threatening injuries.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) will review the use of deadly force and will now take over this investigation.
Deputies have closed off California Street at Old California on both ends (by the S-curves).
The incident is also under review by HCSO Internal Affairs.
