As President Obama reiterated to Russian President Putin over the phone Sunday, the U.S. rejected the Crimea secession referendum as illegal, despite its reported overwhelming passage. U.S. officials reaffirmed that the Obama administration will, along with the European Union, impose penalties on Russia if it annexes the strategic region. As Putin may for now savor the victory, there are already signed that in the long run, Ukraine may be a big mistake for him, particularly in isolating him, his county, and its economy.
