A 12-year-old in Cleveland, Ohio, identified as Tamir Rice, has died Sunday after being shot by two officers who responded to a park after getting a call that someone was waving a gun at the park Saturday.
Police Chief Ed Tomba says that the boy was shot after he pulled the fake gun, which did not have a orange safety on it, after officers told him to raise his hands. He did not point the gun at the officers.
A family attorney said Rice went to the park with friends Saturday but doesn’t have details as to what led to the shooting.
The Blade reports that a first year rookie officer and a 10-year veteran of the police department are placed on leave while the case is investigated.
“His mother is devastated,” attorney Timothy Kucharski said.
