Clerk of Court Candidate Arrested

POINCIANA, Fla. (AP) _ A candidate to become a central Florida county clerk of court has an arrest record dating back more than 35 years and is currently wanted on charges of embezzlement.

The Orlando Sentinel (http://bit.ly/PeKJEx ) reports records from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and information from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office show Republican Dan Durfey has convictions for felonies and misdemeanors in three Florida counties.

The 54-year-old man was also sentenced to three years in prison in 1984 for violating probation.

Durfey is one of three Republicans on Tuesday’s primary ballot.

An arrest warrant was issued for his arrest on Friday. It states he used an authorized debit card to steal nearly $57,000 from First Baptist Church in Poinciana.

Deputies say he used church money to finance his campaign.
