Ceremony Marks Anniversary Of Police Shootings

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — St. Petersburg police are observing the first anniversary of two officers being gunned down in the line of duty.

The department said the early morning ceremony Tuesday will mark the deaths of Sgt. Thomas Baitinger and Officer Jeffrey Yaslowitz. Both were killed trying to apprehend a fugitive hiding in an attic on Jan. 24, 2011.

The flag at police headquarters will be lowered to half-staff and an honor guard will lay a wreath next to photographs of the officers. Mayor Bill Foster and police Chief Chuck Harmon are scheduled to speak.

The St. Petersburg department lost another one its own less than a month later when Officer David S. Crawford was fatally shot, allegedly by a teen he stopped on the street.
