A car went flying into a mobile home early Friday after a 27-year-old man led police on a high-speed chase throughout the city, officials said.
When Felipe Castillo-Oyola, 27, ran a stop sign while driving a gold Nissan Maxima at the intersection of Belleview Drive and U.S. 19 just before 4 a.m., Officer John Horning attempted to make a routine traffic stop, police said.
Horning activated his cruiser’s lights and siren, but Castillo-Oyola didn’t stop, police said.
The gold Nissan sped up to 70 miles per hour east on Siesta Drive and then south on Leo Kidd Drive, police said. Castillo-Oyola wound his way through the area, turning east on Pinehill Road, south on Congress Street and then east on Accent Lane, where he lost control, police said.
The car launched right into the west side of a mobile home, police said. No one inside was hurt.
After the crash, police said, Castillo-Oyola took off on foot. He was taken into custody about 20 yards away from his car, police said.
Upon searching the Nissan, officers discovered a .45-Sig Sauer gun under the driver’s seat, police said. A sock in the back pocket of the driver’s seat contained more ammunition, police said.
Castillo-Oyola has been charged with fleeing to elude, carrying a concealed fire arm, reckless driving and leaving the scene of an accident. He later told officers he was afraid police would discover his loaded gun, so he ran.
