Calls For Embattled Youth Detention Center To Close

There are calls for the closure of an embattled Avon Park youth detention facility.

Leading the charge in the call for the Highlands Youth Academy to be shut down is a grand jury, which did a comprehensive probe of the facility in the wake of a riot there two years ago that required 150 outside police officers to put down.

The grand jury report says the facility is in disrepair and that juvenile delinquents are not well supervised by staff.

It concludes that the youth, guards, and the public at large are in danger.

It also says taxpayers are being ripped off by the private firm which runs the facility, G4S Services.

The Department of Juvenile Justice says since the riot, the number of young people supervised by each staff member has been cut in half.

The grand jury report calls for a return to juvenile boot camps.
