Eighty-five-year-old Mary O’Kane was playing patriotic tunes such as “America the Beautiful” along with hymns from the 199-foot steeple two blocks down from the site of Monday’s bombings.
She said Thursday that she hoped President Barack Obama might hear and be comforted by the music as he visited the city to attend at a service at a nearby Catholic cathedral.
O’Kane has been playing the 16-bell carillon since 1981. She was at her home on Beacon Hill reading a book when the pressure-cooker bombs exploded, killing three people and wounded nearly 200 more.
