Bear Mauls Dog In Central Florida

LONGWOOD, Fla. — Wildlife officials have set up traps in an effort to capture a bear suspected of mauling a small dog outside a central Florida home.

The traps were set up after the owners of the Yorkshire terrier reported Monday that the bear had killed their pet in the Orlando suburb of Longwood.

The area has had previous bear attacks.

A year ago, a woman in the nearby suburb of Lake Mary was mauled by a bear. After the attack, wildlife officials killed more than a half-dozen bears that showed signs of being accustomed to human food, either from garbage or human feeding.

In 2013, a woman was attacked by bears while walking her dogs in Longwood.
