Bandleader Guy Lombardo’s Legacy Kept in SW Florida

FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) _ The Florida-based descendants of legendary bandleader Guy Lombardo are trying to find a home for all his memorabilia.

Lombardo and his orchestra rang in the New Year for nearly half a century on the radio and then on television.

His annual performances from 1929 through 1976 earned Lombardo the nickname “Mr. New Year’s Eve.”

Lombardo died in 1977 and the New Year’s Eve mantel passed to Dick Clark.

Lombardo’s nieces and a nephew tell the News-Press (http://newspr.es/UD2GSK ) that they’re looking for a university or institution to archive and display the photographs, record albums, sheet music and awards Lombardo and his band acquired over the decades.

The memorabilia is divided now between their homes and two storage units in Fort Myers and Sanibel.
