A man went to a Utah river Saturday planning on fishing, but he didn’t know he’d find what he did in the Spanish Fork River.
According to officials, the man waded into the river around noon and noticed a car upside-down in the water. He then proceeded to call for help, and when the rescuers arrive and the car was tipped onto its side they discovered an 18-month-old girl and her 25-year-old mother.
The 18-month-old was still alive and was taken to a Salt Lake City hospital, where she is in critical condition. The mother, on the other hand, was found dead in the vehicle.
A resident nearby said he heard a crash the evening prior but saw nothing unusual when glancing outside. If that sound was the car going into the river, that would mean the baby was trapped in the car for about 14 hours.
