Amazon Announces New Plans For Tampa

Amazon_2013TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Internet retailer Amazon.com Inc. announced plans to build warehouses in Hillsborough and Polk counties, creating more than 1,000 jobs in central Florida.

The company said in a news release that it would build fulfillment centers in Hillsborough County and Lakeland. Each will be more than 1 million square feet.

Earlier in the month, local officials said Amazon had closed on a deal to locate a distribution center in Hillsborough County, but the company made the public announcement Tuesday.

The company says that at the Lakeland facility, employees will select, pack and ship large items such as kayaks and televisions to customers. Employees at the Hillsborough location will send smaller items to customers.

The company didn’t specify an opening date for the facilities.
