PUNTA GORDA, Fla. (AP) — A dry winter and spring in southwest Florida means that alligators are on the move, seeking fresh water and new food sources.
The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office says alligators are moving around more than usual, partly because of mating season, as well as the current extreme dry season that is depleting their water holes and food supply.
Deputies, FWC and trappers have responded to several reports this month of alligators in yards, sidewalks, driveways, roadways and swimming pools.
A seven-foot alligator got into one homeowner’s pool after breaking through the lanai screen recently.
