61 Tons Of Silver Found In Nazi-Torpedoed Ship

American deep-sea explorers recovered more than 61 tons of silver this month from a shipwreck nearly 3 miles beneath the ocean’s surface — a world record.

Back in 1941, a British cargo ship, the SS Gairsoppa, was carrying the treasure from India to the United Kingdom when Nazis torpedoed the vessel nearly 300 miles off the coast of Ireland….

“This was an extremely complex recovery, which was complicated by the sheer size and structure of the SS Gairsoppa,” said Greg Stemm, the company’s chief executive officer.

The treasure hunters’ home base was the Seabed Worker, a 291-foot ship. They remotely controlled marine vehicles that can dive to depths of about 3 miles.
