Anson Mills’ Heirloom Grains

From the Food Nation Radio News Desk

It was 1684 and the American Dream was still a hundred years in the future.

In the swampy low country of South Carolina, rice was introduced to the American Colonies from Africa.  By the 18th and 19th centuries, huge rice plantations sprang up along the coast and the production of rice became a huge industry drawing upon the rich, moist, fertile soil.

By the middle on the 20th century, the rice industry that built cities like Charleston and Savannah was gone and had moved westward to Louisiana and Texas.

This week on Food Nation Radio, we spoke with Glenn Roberts, the founder of Anson Mills.  As you’ll hear, he explains what happened to the rice industry in South Carolina, and what his company is doing to resurrect Carolina Gold Rice.
