Stock Market Dips

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are edging lower as Europe’s debt troubles continued to hang over markets.

The euro fell against the dollar Monday and European stock indexes were mostly lower as traders looked ahead to the challenges still facing the region as it tries to contain its debt crisis.

The Dow Jones industrial average is down 42 points to 12,110, as of 11:45 p.m. Eastern. Bank stocks sank the most. Bank of America and JPMorgan Chase & Co. fell 2 percent, the largest drops among Dow stocks.

The S&P 500 index fell 8 points, or 0.7 percent, to 1,254. The Nasdaq composite fell 10, or 0.4 percent, to 2,667.

Stock indexes closed higher last week as it appeared Greece and Italy were making steps toward getting their debt troubles under control.
