Keys Man Pleads Guilty in Illegal Lobster Trade

KEY WEST, Fla. (AP) — A Florida Keys man is facing up to five years in federal prison after admitting that he bought and sold thousands of illegally harvested lobsters.

The Miami Herald reported Monday (http://bit.ly/qN3eG4 ) that 48-year-old Scott Greager of Stock Island pleaded guilty in a Key West federal court.

Prosecutors say he conspired to buy more than 5,000 pounds of lobster from two commercial divers over seven days in 2008. That was about twice the legal limit.

He will be sentenced in January. The two divers have pleaded not guilty.

The local lobster fisherman’s association has asked for the federal crackdown, saying the lobster population could be lost if catch limits are not enforced.
