No Super Bowl and cool weather means a great weekend for streaming video. Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, Acorn, HBO GO, and Showtime Anytime, all have fun things to sample this weekend. The buzz for this weekend centers around The Collection.
The highly anticipated The Collection makes its debut today and there is plenty to like about this new dramatic offering. Amazon’s latest original drama gives viewers a look at World War II that most of us have never seen before.
The show opens in Paris, France and The Collection looks at the fight to restore glamour, romance, and normalcy after the siege was over. It has beautiful women wearing beautiful clothes and plenty of plot twists to keep you happy.
The show did well in the U.K., where Amazon debuted the show with great fanfare. Writer and creator Oliver Goldstick (Ugly Betty, Pretty Little Liars), is a gripping family saga where Sabine family’s relentless pursuit of success causes plenty of drama.
The show is set in a post-war Parisian fashion house, the Sabines have been tasked with restoring the city’s supremacy as the haute couture capital. The series explores the grit behind the glamour of a rising business run by two clashing brothers.
Not into drama? Netflix has funny man Ricky Gervais returning to the role of David Brent that he made famous with the groundbreaking BBC cringe comedy The Office.
He stars in this new Netflix mockumentary – David Brent: Life on the Road. This is a must see for anyone who fell in love with BBC edition of The Office, can’t miss this show.
Showtime Anytime has a great new series from the gang at Bloomberg politics that brought you the great show The Circus. A real time documentary done weekly through the presidential campaign all the way from day one through the night Donald Trump became president.
So, they are back with a new show, yes journalists Mark Halperin and John Heilemann and former candidate advisor Mark McKinnon have returned with Showtime documentary Trumped: Inside The Greatest Political Upset of All Time, which they executive produced and premiered at Sundance.
HBO GO is ready for the return of Lena Dunham’s edgy dramedy Girls, chronicling the lives of four twenty-somethings in New York City debuts its final season on Sunday, February 12. What will be the fate of Adam and Jessa? Will Hannah maintain her career momentum? Is a Marnie-Ray-Shoshanna love triangle imminent? All these questions (and more!) might be answered in the sixth season of Girls.
Acorn is streaming one my favorites from New Zealand – 800 Words, is a very well done and clever comedy. There’s a reason why this family dramedy has been named the No. 1 show in Australia. 800 Words follows a recently widowed father who quits his job as a 800-word columnist at a Sydney paper to give his family a fresh start. There are a lot of mistakes, but there’s also a lot of love.
