Women ruled the Emmy Awards with Hulu pulling the big upset with The Handmaid’s Tale
It was a big night for HBO, Hulu, and NBC as they came away with the most golden statues at 69th Primetime Emmy Awards last night in Los Angeles.
There were some old favorites taking home the prizes like Julia Louis-Dreyfus winning again for the best actress in a comedy for HBO’s Veep, but there some big time wins and most were upsets.
It was a big night for women as female-fronted dramas, HBO’s star studded, Big Little Lies and Hulu’s, The Handmaid’s Tale that this was the year of the woman on the small screen. There were a number of records achieved too, including Lena Waithe as the first black woman to ever win an Emmy for comedy writing for the Netflix program Master of none.
The Handmaid’s Tale the drama produced by the streaming service Hulu was a stand out winner at last night’s Emmy Awards. It was a big night for Hulu’s controversial drama series as it took home five golden statues.
Wins for best drama, best lead actress, best supporting actress and best writing for a drama series. Hulu, pulled off the upset by besting their two biggest streaming competitors in Netflix and Amazon, to become the first streamer to win an Emmy for drama series.
“Go home, get to work, we have a lot of things to fight for,” said showrunner Bruce Miller while accepting the best drama win which beat out contenders including Better Call Saul, House of Cards, Stranger Things, Westworld, The Crown and This is Us.
It should not have come as surprise as the talented Elisabeth Moss accepted the Emmy for lead actress in a drama series and Ann Dowd thanked Hulu for allowing her to be part of the adaptation Margaret Atwood’s dystopian novel.
It wasn’t a bad night for Netflix as their top drama, “The Crown” brought home an impressive win in the best supporting actor for a drama series category. The Emmy went to versatile actor John Lithgow, for his portrayal of Winston Churchill,
Netflix also grabbed an Emmy’s for “Black Mirror: San Junipero.” The film took home outstanding TV movie and outstanding writing for a limited series, movie, or dramatic special honors.
