Star athlete faces the media over his suspension
On Thursday, Tampa Bay Buccaneers training camp began in earnest with the first full practice of 2018. There is usually a buzz around professional teams as they get ready to start a new season, but things were different at One Buc Place. Jameis Winston, who will be serving a suspension for the first three games of the 2018 NFL season, faced the football media for the very first time since his suspension was announced.
Because Winston is so much a part of the news, Florida Live with Dan Maduri on AM 820 News and The Rock Riley Show on Sports Talk 1040 paired up for a segment on the embattled quarterback. Dan has been vocal in his criticism of Winston, but as a news host he rarely gets an opportunity to speak with experts in the sports world. Rock Riley, longtime Tampa Bay sports broadcaster, has been covering the team for over 25 years. Rock sheds some light on what the press conference was like from the reporter pool, where so many people showed up just to hear Winston’s comments.
Dan suggests that Winston should feel incredibly lucky to get another chance after the latest incident and suspension, calling the signal-caller a “clown” and citing both his incidents off the field and his play on the gridiron as reasons the former number one overall draft pick is likely hanging by a thread. This is especially problematic because, as both Dan and Rock agree that Winston is the face of the Buccaneers’ organization for good and for ill. No murals or lack thereof around Raymond James Stadium will change that.
Rock explains that the Buccaneers did in fact put a lot of effort into vetting Jameis Winston when they drafted him. The team was convinced that Winston’s character issues were behind him, but those issues have emerged again. Dan and Rock both then talk about the Glazers, and why the owners haven’t faced the media.
