LOS ANGELES – Blake Lively is in big trouble. The actress posted a caption on an Instagram photo “L.A. face with an Oakland booty” on front and back views of herself arriving at the movie premiere. I don’t know why she had to go back to the 1990s and Sir Mix-a-Lot to make the reference. People should be offended by that.
But they’re not. Instead, people are offended that she she appropriated a phrase from a black rapper. One that presumably was used to refer to a black woman. Because God knows it wrong for a white woman to dare describe herself with special words that are reserved for black women. That’s clearly racist.
And judging by the reaction, it’s far more racist than things that keep so many blacks in poverty. It’s more racist than the things that cause the high black incarceration rate. It’s more racist than the things that cause black children to drink poisoned water in Flint, Michigan. This is an insane case of misplaced priorities.
Interestingly, Sir-Mix-a-Lot has come out to defend Blake Lively for making the reference. Good for him. Maybe this can be the start of a more colorblind society. Or in this case, “booty blind.”
