The U.S. State Department announced yesterday that the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad will stay open as militant extremists in Iraq continue their offensive toward the city, but security had been bolstered and some staff members were being moved out of the capital city. Florida Gov. Rick Scott signed 94 bills into law, including a bill that puts a shorter time frame on when women can have abortions. House Bill 1047 bans abortions once fetuses are considered viable, typically at 23 weeks. Scott’s other bills include regulating the parasail industry, the sale of e-cigarettes to minors, unsolicited text messages, regulation of non-profits and shielding nursing home investors from liability in instances of neglect and abuse.
Vice President Joe Biden will meet with the presidents of Guatemala and El Salvador Friday, along with a top official from Honduras to discuss the massive surge of children crossing into the U.S. via Mexico. We discuss the latest with that, including known gang members who are crossing the border. Border Patrol recognizes their tattoos but because they have no criminal records in the U.S., they are given the same rights as others.
A report says that the United States is last among ranking countries on measures of health system quality, efficiency, access to care, equality and healthy lives when compared to 10 other countries. Those being Australia, Canada, France, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and the UK. The US is LAST in that list. ABC News correspondent Scott Goldberg joins us at 8:10.
I-4 is set to get a huge new makeover. The state of Florida is finalizing a deal for an “ultimate” remake of I-4 that will make t the largest public works project in Central Florida history. The project, which could begin construction as early as next year, will include adding four toll lanes down the middle of the interstate, along with rebuilding 15 major interchanges and replacing 75 bridges. We discuss the costs of this huge undertaking on tax payers and how much will be covered by private investors.
The Islamic militants who overran cities and towns in Iraq last week posted graphic photos that appeared to show their gunmen massacring scores of captured Iraqi soldiers, while the prime minister vowed Sunday to “liberate every inch” of captured territory. The pictures on a militant website appear to show masked fighters of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, or ISIS (also known as ISIL), loading the captives onto flatbed trucks before forcing them to lie face-down in a shallow ditch with their arms tied behind their backs. ABC News correspondent Tom Rivers joins us at 8:25.
