California Court Puts Tradition Of Tenure On Ropes
A judge struck down tenure and other job protections for California’s public school teachers as unconstitutional Tuesday, saying such laws harm students — especially poor and minority ones — by saddling them with bad teachers who are almost impossible to fire. In a landmark decision that could influence the gathering debate over tenure across the country, Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Rolf Treu cited the historic case of Brown v. Board of Education in ruling that students have a fundamental right to equal education. Siding with the nine students who brought the lawsuit, he ruled that California’s laws on hiring and firing in schools have resulted in “a significant number of grossly ineffective teachers currently active in California classrooms.”

John Boehner Speaks Out On Prisoner Swap
Boehner gave harsh criticism of the Taliban-prisoner swap in exchange for a U.S. soldier, saying the U.S. would “pay” for President Obama’s decision to negotiate with terrorists. In a new ABC News/ Washington Post poll, the majority of Americans polled appeared critical of the prisoner swap. ABC News correspondent Ann Compton joined us to discuss Boehner’s remarks.
Iraq Militants Seize Second City Of Mosul
The situation in Iraq continues to deteriorate, as the nation’s Prime Minister urged Parliament on Tuesday to declare a state of emergency. The request came hours after militants seized control of portions of Iraq’s second-largest city, Mosul, and freed up to 1,000 prisoners. Authorities said the militants were also in control of the city’s airport, local TV stations and the governor’s offices. Security forces are accused of abandoning the city when the fighting began. Nuri al-Maliki described the Mosul unrest as a dangerous security situation requiring immediate measures to protect civilians.
