Obama Advocates Against Mental Illness Stigma

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama says he is convening a conference on mental illness to bring the issue “out of the shadows.”

Obama is speaking Monday at the opening of the day-long White House conference. The event is part of Obama’s response to last year’s shooting massacre at a Connecticut elementary school.

The president emphasized that most people with mental health problems are not violent. But he says that untreated mental illness can lead to larger tragedies.

President Barack Obama says he is convening a conference on
mental illness to bring the issue “out of the
shadows.”

That may be an entertaining, poetic metaphor, but never have mental
illnesses been more in clear sight. Never have we discussed them more, never
have we been more open about them.

The president emphasized that most people with mental
health problems are not
violent

And most people are not. That statement applies to every
demographic, including reporters. The technique, consciously chosen or not,
allows a person to state a very carefully chosen metaphor to negate it. In this
instance the carefully chosen negative is “violent”. I will not say
you deliberately chose it, and there is is, I did.
