Trial Date Set For Remaining FAMU Defendants

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — A trial date has been set for the remaining six defendants charged in the hazing death of a former Florida A&M drum major.

On Friday, Judge Renee Roche set trial for June in the cases of the six former FAMU band members facing manslaughter and hazing charges in Robert Champion’s November 2011 death after a hazing ritual aboard a bus in an Orlando hotel parking lot. Champion is originally from Decatur, Ga.

Champion’s parents were present Friday and said they would be back for trial.

Fifteen former band members were charged in Champion’s death. Seven have been sentenced to combinations of probation and community service. Two have accepted pleas and await sentencing.

State attorney Jeff Ashton says at least two remaining defendants could reach plea deals before June.
