TPD Investigating Tragic Fatal Accident

Tampa police are investigating a fatal accident involving a 2-year-old.

Shortly after 8:30 p.m., the Tampa Police Department received a 9-1-1 call that a child was hit by a car in the Tampa Park Apartments. When officers arrived on scene they found a security guard at the complex performing CPR on 2-year-old Demetrick Lindsey. The toddler was transported to a local hospital where he later died as a result of his injuries.

Based on the preliminary investigation, the driver was exiting the apartment complex at a slow speed when the toddler ran in front of his vehicle at night. He did not see the child enter the roadway and was unable to avoid hitting the victim. When he realized what took place, he stopped the vehicle and rushed to render aid to the child.

The driver, who was operating his City of Tampa vehicle at the time of the crash, is cooperating with police. He was not issued a citation at the scene, however, detectives are still investigating the crash, including the events that led up to it. At this time, the fatal incident appears to be a tragic accident.
