GRAND JURY WILL HEAR CANADIAN DIPLOMAT’S SON SHOOTING CASE
A grand jury will consider whether to bring formal murder charges against the son of a Canadian diplomat who police say was involved in a drug-related shootout that killed his brother and another teenager, a Florida prosecutor said Wednesday. Assistant State Attorney Marie Mato said after a brief hearing that the grand jury could decide to charge 15-year-old Marc Wabafiyebazu as an adult. His attorney, Curt Obront, said Wabafiyebazu will plead not guilty to any charges that are filed.
FAMILY OF FLORIDA MAN SHOT BY OFFICER RELEASES DASHCAM VIDEO
Lawyers for the family of a South Florida man fatally shot by a police officer have released dash camera video showing part of the confrontation. The family of 25-year-old Lavall Hall, who was mentally ill, says there was no reason for the Miami Gardens police officer to shoot him during a February confrontation. Hall’s mother had called police because her son was having a violent episode, and she was hoping he could get help. Authorities have said Hall was shot because he repeatedly swung a metal broom at them and refused commands to stop.
FINAL SUSPECT GUILTY IN 2007 SLAYING OF REDSKINS’ TAYLOR
The final suspect has pleaded guilty in the 2007 killing of Washington Redskins star safety Sean Taylor during a botched burglary. Timmy Lee Brown will serve 18 years in prison under his plea agreement Wednesday. The 23-year-old Brown was one of five men from the Fort Myers area who drove to Taylor’s home intending to burglarize it. Taylor confronted the group with a machete and was fatally shot. All five suspects were convicted and sent to prison. Triggerman Eric Rivera Jr. got the longest sentence at 60 years.
BOY ACCIDENTALLY SHOOTS GRANDFATHER DURING HUNTING OUTING
Pasco County Sheriff’s officials say a 9-year-old boy accidentally shot his grandfather while hunting near Zephyrhills. The boy was apparently hunting with 54-year-old Marple Miller Tuesday evening. According to sheriff’s officials, Miller was shot in the abdomen with a .22-caliber rifle. The injuries don’t appear to be life-threatening. Zephyrhills is north of Tampa.
USTA BREAKS GROUND ON NEW TENNIS FACILITY IN ORLANDO
The United States Tennis Association is breaking ground on a new facility in Orlando. Officials on Wednesday broke ground on the USTA National Campus facility, which will have more than 100 courts when it is completed next year. The facility will house the USTA’s Community Tennis and Player Development divisions. It is open to the public and also will be home for the University of Central Florida’s men and women’s varsity teams.
