Clearwater Man Guilty Of Killing Man With A Hammer

FLORIDA NEWS: Clearwater Murder

CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) — A Clearwater man has been found guilty of second-degree murder after hitting a man in the head with a hammer at least 18 times and setting his own house on fire.

A jury convicted Danny Papaleo, 61, Friday, though prosecutors were hoping for a first-degree murder conviction. The jury said the killing was not premeditated. He was also found guilty of first-degree arson.

Papaleo killed Bob Greaves, who was a restaurant worker that had a reported drinking problem and a child with Papaleo’s stepdaughter. Greaves was found dead in a porch on the back of Papaleo’s home by firefighters.

Papaleo was taken to the hospital and first said a man named Joe, or Yo, was responsible before giving multiple different stories. Greaves told his roommate he was meeting Papaleo to discuss a job.
