OCTOBER DATE FOR BOSCH GUILTY PLEA IN MLB DRUG CASE
Former Florida clinic owner Anthony Bosch is expected to plead guilty at an October hearing to a drug distribution conspiracy charge in Major League Baseball’s most recent performance-enhancing substances scandal. A Miami federal judge on Wednesday set an Oct. 16 date for Bosch to enter the plea. The former Biogenesis of America clinic owner’s attorneys and federal prosecutors reached an agreement last month in which Bosch admitted providing testosterone to baseball players, from professionals to high school athletes.
POLICE: HOMELESS MAN FATALLY STABS BIKER
A graphic designer on a biking trip from Maryland to Miami was fatally stabbed by a homeless man (pictured above) outside a Florida McDonald’s while he spoke on the phone with his girlfriend, authorities said. Twenty-eight-year-old Kevin Adorno, of Unionville, Connecticut stumbled into the restaurant Monday after the attack, witnesses told police. Authorities say he had been talking on the phone with his girlfriend, to whom he planned to propose at the end of the trip.
DEADLY DOLPHIN VIRUS SHOWS UP IN FLORIDA LAGOON
Scientists say a virus that has killed bottlenose dolphins along the East Coast has spread to central Florida’s Indian River Lagoon. Megan Stolen, a research scientist at the Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute, says 18 dead bottlenose dolphins were found in the area in August. Florida Today reports that 70 dolphins typically die in the lagoon region annually. So far this year, 67 dolphins have died there.
FSU INTERIM PRESIDENT APPLIES FOR PERMANENT JOB
Florida State University interim president Garnett Stokes says she wants the job permanently. Stokes turned in her application by the Tuesday deadline. She is seeking the post even though there are high-profile politicians such as State Sen. John Thrasher already seeking the position. Stokes was provost under former President Eric Barron. Barron left FSU to take the top position at Penn State University.
SOUTHCOM SHOWS OFF NEW DISASTER RELIEF GEAR
The U.S. Southern Command is showing off a variety of new equipment intended to improve communications during disaster relief and humanitarian assistance missions. The command headquartered near Miami demonstrated some of its cutting-edge technology Wednesday.
