2 INJURED IN CLEARWATER BEACH SHOOTING
Authorities say four men face multiple charges following a Memorial Day shooting on Clearwater Beach. Two people were shot, including one who was apparently shot in the hand and fled the scene. Police say the shootings arose from an argument between two groups of people
GOV. RICK SCOTT SET TO INTRODUCE NEW POLICIES FOCUSED ON SMALL BUSINESSES AND ENTREPRENEURS
On Tuesday, Scott will be in Miami to start a two-week statewide tour highlighting his proposals to reduce corporate filing fees for small businesses and increasing funding for export marketing programs. He’ll also announce a $10 million “Risk Taker Award” that he says will reward entrepreneurs and small businesses for developing solutions to specific issues with private capital. Scott also proposes establishing annual business competitions hosted by Florida’s colleges and universities that would award winners up to $100,000.
FLORIDA MAN FACING TRIAL FOR TERRORISM CHARGES ASKS TO WEAR TRADITIONAL ARAB CLOTHING IN COURT
Sami Osmakac’s lawyer told a federal magistrate that his client wants to wear a robe garment called a thobe (THAWB) and a head wrap known as a kaffiyeh (KAF fi YEH). Osmakac was found competent to stand trial. Jury selection is scheduled to start Tuesday. Authorities allege Osmakac plotted to blow up a popular Tampa night spot and then take hostages and demand the release of Islamic prisoners. He was arrested as part of an FBI sting.
FLORIDA TRIAL OVER POLITICAL MAPS ENTERS SECOND WEEK
The non-jury trial is expected to resume Tuesday with testimony from well-connected Republican political consultants. A coalition of groups contends state legislators ignored a 2010 constitutional amendment that required them to draw up congressional districts that do not protect incumbents or members of a certain party. Attorneys for the Legislature have denied any wrongdoing.
ORLANDO MAGIC OFFER $100,000 FOR ACCURATELY PREDICTING TOP 14 PICKS IN UPCOMING NBA DRAFT
The promotion began May 20 and will continue through midnight June 22. The draft is June 26. If multiple fans correctly predict the order of players selected, the prize money will be shared equally by the winners. If no one accurately predicts the first 14 picks, one person will be drawn from the entries and awarded two season tickets for the Magic’s 2014-15 season. The contest is open to Florida residents 18 and older who live within 75 miles of Orlando.
