JUDGE GIVEN OPPOSING VIEWS ON MAP TRIAL
A Florida judge is being given starkly different versions of what happened when state legislators drew new political maps for Congress. Attorneys for the Florida Legislature and groups suing them have submitted closing statements to Circuit Judge Terry Lewis. Lewis must decide whether or not the Legislature broke the law when it came up with new congressional districts in 2012.
FLORIDA MAN HID DRUGS UNDER ‘STOMACH FAT’
Deputies say a central Florida man was hiding 23 grams of marijuana and some cocaine under his “stomach fat” when he was stopped for not wearing a seatbelt. The deputy thought the man and the driver of the vehicle were acting strangely when he stopped them so he requested a drug-sniffing dog, which found the stash.
TRIAL IN FAMU HAZING CASE PUSHED BACK TO SEPTEMBER
A judge has pushed the trial of five remaining defendants charged in the hazing death of a FAMU drum major back three months to allow defense attorneys more time to prepare. Judge Renee Roche agreed during a hearing Monday to delay it until the trial period beginning Sept. 22. Trial had been set to begin next week, but attorneys for three defendants asked the judge for a continuance.
WOMAN LEAVES JAIL BEFORE BEING BOOKED
A woman walked out of the Jacksonville jail before being booked on domestic battery charges. Officials say she passed through a gate that allows police vehicles into the jail. An investigation is underway.
MIAMI HEAT REIGN ENDS IN SAN ANTONIO
The San Antonio Spurs started slow on Sunday night but quickly rebounded, beating the two-time champions 104-87 in Game 5 of the NBA Finals. LeBron James had 31 points and 10 rebounds for the Heat, but it wasn’t enough as the Spurs took a 47-40 lead at halftime and didn’t look back.
