ATTORNEYS IN THEATER SHOOTING WEIGH DEFENSE
Attorneys for a retired Tampa police captain accused of shooting a man in a movie theater raised the possibility of using a “stand your ground” defense at trial next year. Curtis Reeves Jr. is charged with second-degree murder in the Jan. 13 shooting of Chad Oulson of Land O’Lakes. Prosecutors said Oulson was shot in the chest during an argument about texting.
2 SOUTH FLORIDA PUBLIC DEFENDERS FIRED
Two Broward County have lost their jobs after derogatory remarks about Palestinians appeared on their Facebook pages. Broward County Public Defender Howard Finkelstein told local television stations that Bruce Raticoff and Gary Sheres were fired Tuesday after comments on Facebook referred to Palestinians as “filthy swine” and “cockroaches.”
VISITORS WAIT 5 HOURS FOR HARRY POTTER RIDE
For a second day in a row, visitors are waiting up to five hours to get on a new Harry Potter ride at Universal Orlando Resort in Florida. A sign at the entrance to the ride, Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts, at midday Wednesday said the wait would be 300 minutes.
GIRL, 12, TAKES MOM’S CAR, GETS ARRESTED
Police say a 12-year-old girl is in big trouble after taking her mother’s car and speeding down an Ocala road. The girl was stopped by a police officer who was doing radar checks on Tuesday. Authorities say the girl gave the officer a fake name and age. She was taken to a juvenile detention center.
POLICE WARN OF IRS SCAM
Police say a 72-year-old woman is out $12,000 after falling victim to a scam involving a fake IRS representative. The woman told Boynton Beach she received a call on Monday from a man claiming to be from the IRS who told her she’d be arrested if she didn’t make an immediate payment. She bought pre-paid cards worth $12,000 and gave him the numbers. She realized it was a scam when he called back and asked for another $12,000.
