Lakeland Police Chief Resigns Following Scandals

Lisa WomakLAKELAND, Fla. (AP) — Lakeland’s police chief is resigning after a no-confidence vote from police officers and employees.

City Manager Douglas Thomas says Chief Lisa Womack turned in a letter of resignation on Friday. That’s two days after employees voted 152-123 to express no confidence in Womack’s leadership.

Thomas said he did not ask for Womack’s resignation and that the decision was her own. She will remain chief until May 1.

The Lakeland Police Department was plagued the past year by a series of scandals. The Ledger (http://goo.gl/MCLdge ) reports that the department faced a sweeping sexual misconduct investigation, criminal cases fouled by search and reporting procedures, the arrest of an officer on charges he sexually abused and stalked a woman while on duty and a grand jury investigation into problems with Womack and the department’s handling of public records.
