Lakeland: Officers Injured In Shooting

A Lakeland police officer and a suspect were injured Tuesday morning in a shootout, police said.

The shootout happened around 10:30 am on the area of 800 N Florence Ave.

According to police, Sgt. Jeff Gary and officer Doug Mills responded to N Lake Wire Park to arrest a man wanted on a warrant for resisting arrest without violence. After speaking to the man, Police Chief Larry Giddens said he pulled out a gun and shot at them. The suspect had four firearms on him.

The officers were forced to return fire. Mills, 36, was shot in the upper arm. Giddens said he is in good condition at Lakeland Regional Medical Center.

The suspect was shot multiple times and is being treated at the same hospital as the officer. He is in serious condition.
