(AP) — Now that Donald Trump is the likely GOP presidential nominee, the five Republican Senate candidates hoping to share the ballot with him are expressing mixed feelings about the brash billionaire. Florida’s open Senate seat is one of the keys to which party will control power over the
chamber after this year’s election, and turnout in the presidential race will have an effect on the Senate race.

The Senate is slated to vote on competing plans to battle the Zika virus. A bipartisan, anti-virus plan that cuts Obama’s $1.9 billion request down to $1.1 billion is seen as having the greatest chance of advancing.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — A Florida businessman seeking to replace Marco Rubio in the U.S. Senate is coming under fire from his opponents for calling President Barack Obama an “animal.” In a speech to a Republican group on Thursday, Manatee County homebuilder Carlos Beruff criticized Obama as an “animal” who has “destroyed the country” and “dismantled the military” during his time in office.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — A bail bondsman was in the right place to help police catch three teenagers accused of kidnapping a man from the parking garage of a Tampa condominium complex. The Tampa Bay Times reports Rod Fisher saw a man carrying a gun stumble from a car, which sped away. He followed and called 911. The teens, ages 13 and 15, were arrested following the foiled kidnapping.

PALMETTO, Fla. (AP) — A former Pinellas County deputy is facing multiple drunken driving charges for a crash that left a woman dead. Timothy Vaughan has been charged with DUI manslaughter and three other counts for the May 6 crash.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — The captain of the freighter El Faro told the last person to see him and the crew before the ship’s final voyage that he was aware of a storm brewing at sea, but had a plan go under it. Eric Bryson, the bar pilot that sailed the El Faro out of the Port of Jacksonville on its final voyage, testified yesterday before the U.S. Coast Guard Marine Board of Investigation.

PORT EVERGLADES, Fla. (AP) — The mother of a missing teen fisherman says the recovered boat her son took to sea should be examined as a possible crime scene. Pamela Cohen issued a letter Monday asking the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conversation Commission to examine the 19-foot vessel to see if there is evidence that a crime led to the disappearance of her son Perry Cohen and his friend Austin Stephanos.

Fire Rescue crews responded to an early morning fire Tuesday at Cycle Springs Powersports in Clearwater just after 4 a.m. this morning. The motorycle shop is located at 29811 U.S. Highway 19 near Curlew Road. Firefighters reported seeing flames and smoke from the building when they arrived and a portion of the showroom roof was damaged.
