MAN GETS 30 YEARS FOR KILLING MISTRESS
A Miami man has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for killing his mistress and dumping her body near the Everglades. A Miami-Dade judge sentenced 64-year-old Roque Torres on Wednesday. Jurors in March convicted him of second-degree murder with a deadly weapon. Prosecutors say Torres shot Marisol Ramon during an argument inside his SUV in May 2010.
ST. PETE NURSING HOME FINED $16,000 BY STATE
A St. Petersburg nursing home has been fined by state regulators after workers there performed CPR and used a defibrillator on a 75-year-old man who had a “do not resuscitate” order on file. Jacaranda Manor was fined $16,000. Under state law, nursing homes must honor residents’ end-of-life directives.
MAN GETS LIFE SENTENCE FOR DRUG MURDER
A central Florida man has been sentenced to life in prison for shooting to death an 18-year-old high school student in 2012. A Polk County judge sentenced 21-year-old Ethan Lucas on Tuesday after a jury convicted him of first-degree murder and attempted robbery. Lucas killed Alicia Barnett in an attempt to steal marijuana that she was selling.
ORLANDO CITY SELLS MINOR LEAGUE FRANCHISE RIGHTS
Orlando City Soccer Club has reached an agreement to relocate its minor league franchise rights to Louisville, Kentucky, following its entry into Major League Soccer next year. The agreement was announced on Wednesday. Louisville’s new USL PRO league franchise will begin playing in 2015, as well.
DRUNKEN DRIVER GETS 17 YEARS FOR FATAL CRASH
A Tampa Bay area man has been sentenced to 17 years in prison for a fatal drunken driving crash. Tracy Garon pleaded guilty Wednesday to numerous charges, including DUI manslaughter and vehicular homicide. Authorities say the 59-year-old man ran a red light in 2012 and hit two other cars, killing 81-year-old Charles A. Berry. The victim’s wife and another driver were injured.
