Interview: Melanoma Cases Going Up

America’s top doctor has declared skin cancer “a major public health problem that requires immediate action.” Surgeon General Boris Lushniak’s office issued a report saying, basically, we need to stay out of the sun.

Even though most skin cancers can be prevented, the report says, the number of cases – including melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer – is going up. The report comes on the heels of an FDA rule requiring warning stickers on tanning beds.

Meanwhile, that same agency has been slow to approve the use of sunscreen ingredients that have proven effective in Europe.
