BROWARD COUNTY, Fla.- Broward County commuters will soon have to deal with the headache of shifting lanes and road closures for the next few months.

Major roadways from Hollywood to Lake Worth will be getting new traffic signs. The Florida Department of Transportation said they will be replacing signs on U.S. 1, U.S. 441, Dixie Highway, State Road 84, and Copans, Glades, and Palmetto Park roads.

The project will cost $1.6 million dollars and will begin later this month with the replacement of the green aluminum signs on U.S. 1 north and south of Sheridan Street in Dania Beach.

Other signs will be located, per the Sun Sentinel at:

• In the circle around Hollywood City Hall.

• On U.S. 1 and State Road 84 in Fort Lauderdale.

• On U.S. 441 / State Road 7 at Oakland Park Boulevard in Lauderdale Lakes.

• Copans Road on both sides of Interstate-95 in Pompano Beach.

• On westbound Glades Road west of Airport Road in Boca Raton.

• On westbound Palmetto Park Road east of the northbound ramp to I-95 in Boca Raton.

According to FDT, once sign replacement begins in the median or on the side of the road, one lane in each direction will be closed between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

When signs that straddle the whole road are being replaced, all lanes will be closed from 12 a.m. to 6 a.m. Monday through Thursday.

However, lane closures near I-95 will not affect assess entrance and exit ramps.

Along with the actual sign the aluminum sign supports are being replaced with steel supports because of metal fatigue and cracking, said officials.

The state transportation department said in an unrelated road closure to the sign replacement closures, up to three lanes of southbound I-95 between Hallandale Beach Boulevard and Ives Dairy Road will be shut overnight Friday. Installation of an overhead sign that was damaged by a tornado in February will be replaced that night.
