FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) _ A South Florida judge will determine whether a Miramar man acted in self-defense when he fatally shot an off-duty federal agent outside a post office.
The Miami Herald reports that 69-year-old James Wonder is seeking immunity from prosecution under Florida’s stand your ground law.
The hearing began this week in Circuit Judge Bernard Bobar’s Fort Lauderdale courtroom.
Police say Wonder shot 52-year-old Donald Pettit, an agent for U.S. Customs and Border Protection agent.
The shooting happened after a shouting match ensued between the two as they were driving in Pembroke Pines on Aug. 5, 2008.
When Wonder pulled into the post office parking lot, Pettit followed.
Reports say Pettit was shot in the head when he confronted him near his vehicle.
Defense attorneys say Wonder felt he was in danger.
