FLORIDA DOCTOR GUILTY OF $2.5 MILLION MEDICARE FRAUD
A South Florida doctor known to patients as the “Rock Doc” because of his spiky hairstyle and punk fashion has pleaded guilty to $2.5 million in Medicare fraud, as well as a drug crime. Miami Beach Dr. Christopher Gregory Wayne entered the guilty pleas Tuesday in Miami federal court. He signed a statement saying he billed Medicare for various services that were unneeded or never provided.
FSU TRUSTEES TO HOLD EMERGENCY MEETING
Florida State University trustees are holding an emergency meeting in the wake of the resignation of President Eric Barron. Barron earlier this week agreed to become president of Penn State University. He is going to get a base salary nearly double what FSU was paying him. Trustees will meet Wednesday to determine the process for selecting a replacement.
UM MED STUDENTS TO HELP WITH ACA ENROLLMENT
The University of Miami is launching a pilot program to encourage young adults to sign up for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act. The president’s new law relies on “navigators” and other counselors to help sign people up for insurance. Traditionally, those roles have been filled by adults, but UM recruited its medical students for the job.
CRUISE WORKER ACCUSED OF RAPING PASSENGER
Authorities say a cruise ship worker is accused of raping a passenger aboard a Holland America Line vessel and then trying to throw her overboard. The FBI reports that 28-year-old Ketut Pujayasa was arrested Sunday when the MS Nieuw Amsterdam returned to Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale. The incident occurred early Friday morning in international waters off the coast of Roatan, Honduras.
BANKSY WORK SELLS AT MIAMI AUCTION FOR $575,000
One of three works by the elusive British street artist Banksy has sold at a Miami auction for $575,000. An anonymous buyer purchased “Kissing Coppers,” spray-painted in 2005 on the Prince Albert Pub in Brighton, England, at the Fine Art Auctions Miami on Tuesday night. The other two pieces — done in New York last year — didn’t receive their minimum bids but interested buyers can still contact the auction house within 30 days.
