CRIST AND RICH MAKE FINAL PUSH FOR DEMOCRATS’ VOTES BEFORE PRIMARY DAY
A final, frenzied push for votes is underway in Democrats’ race to reclaim the governor’s mansion. Former Gov. Charlie Crist, the longtime Republican who is seeking to reclaim his old job as a Democrat, has planned events in Jacksonville, Tampa, Orlando, Wellington and Fort Lauderdale on Monday. His underdog opponent, former Senate Democratic Leader Nan Rich, is spending time at a phone bank at her Weston campaign headquarters making last-minute get-out-the-vote calls. Both candidates are vying for a shot to unseat Gov. Rick Scott, who has two mostly unknown primary challengers of his own.
TROPICAL STORM CRISTOBAL LASHES CARIBBEAN; FORECASTERS EXPECT STRENGTHENING
Floridians are keeping a watchful eye on Tropical Storm Cristobal, which formed Sunday and brought heavy rainfall and white-crested surf to the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos. Swollen rivers swept at least three people away in the Dominican Republic and Haiti, but forecasters expected the storm to curve away from the U.S. east coast.
BURGER KING TO BUY TIM HORTONS
Burger King is in talks to buy doughnut chain Tim Hortons and create a new holding company headquartered in Canada, a move that could shave its tax bill. Such an overseas shift, called a tax inversion, has become increasingly popular among U.S. companies and a hot political issue. Burger King was founded in 1954 with a single restaurant in Miami, where it is currently based.
20 MIGRANTS ASHORE IN SOUTH FLORIDA, 1 DEAD
Twenty people believed to be from Haiti came ashore in South Florida on Monday morning, officials said. One woman was found dead in the surf along Hillsboro Beach and another was taken to a hospital for treatment after residents of nearby condominiums alerted Hillsboro police. Another man was found in Boca Raton. All have been turned over to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, while the Broward Sheriff’s Office will investigate the death.
LONG PRISON SENTENCES IN FLORIDA HOUSING FRAUD
Two people have been sentenced to lengthy prison terms following their convictions in an elaborate housing fraud scheme operated out of a vacant South Florida coin laundry. U.S. District Judge James Cohn last week sentenced Darryl Burke to 30 years in prison and Vicki Garland to 15 years. They were convicted of conspiracy and fraud charges in February.
